Zug Bug – Standard or Bead Head

The Zug Bug is one of the most respected and versatile trout nymph patterns ever created. Featuring a peacock herl body, soft hackle movement, and the distinctive fan tail that made the pattern famous, the Zug Bug effectively imitates a variety of aquatic insects that trout feed on throughout the year.

The Bead Head version adds extra weight and flash, helping the fly sink quickly into productive feeding zones while increasing visibility in deeper water and faster currents. This added versatility makes it an excellent choice for nymph rigs, indicator fishing, and dropper setups.

While commonly used to imitate caddis larvae and mayfly nymphs, larger sizes can also suggest stonefly and salmonfly nymphs. Its attractor qualities and natural movement make it a productive searching pattern whenever trout are feeding subsurface.
